Ahead of the 2025 elections, the Cameroon Association of English-Speaking Journalists (CAMASEJ) conducted a two-day workshop in Bafoussam, West Region, equipping 30 journalists with essential skills for election reporting and safety.

The workshop from June 12–13, brought together media practitioners from across Cameroon to enhance their capacity in ethical election coverage and improve safety in their line of duty, particularly for those working in high-risk environments.

Under the theme “Optimizing Media Engagement in Peace Efforts,” the event unveiled a significant “Election Reporting and Safety Handbook for Journalists,” specifically designed to address the unique challenges reporters face in conflict affected regions like the North West and South West. Led by experienced media trainers, sessions focused on practical tools for navigating conflict-sensitive areas. Dr. Mbinglo Gilles, emphasized the importance of understanding the Cameroon Electoral Code and Constitution to responsibly navigate complex political narratives. He encouraged journalists to carry the electoral code and constitution, along like their religious texts, symbolizing a commitment to both professional integrity and moral responsibility.

Participants were introduced to practical tools for verifying electoral information and countering misinformation in the lead-up to the presidential elections.

Highlight of the workshop was the official presentation of CAMASEJ’s Safety Handbook for Journalists, a user-friendly manual offering online and offline safety guidelines. The handbook addresses common risks faced by reporters, including harassment, arrest, cyber-attacks, and threats from both state and non-state actors, making it particularly relevant for journalists reporting in crisis affected regions.

CAMASEJ National President Viban Jude emphasized the critical role of the media in providing informed choices during the electoral process, urging journalists to provide adequate information on candidates and institutions while upholding the legal and ethical frameworks governing elections in Cameroon. He encouraged all eligible citizens and candidates to register and participate fully in the democratic process, while urging that journalists be allowed to carry out their duties without bias and within the law.

At the workshop’s conclusion, journalists were encouraged to share their newly acquired knowledge and advocate for fairness in reporting, avoiding partisan support for politicians.
