Some Inhabitants of Bamenda have decided to transform the Mile VI dumping site, Mankon into an office that generates income to sustain their families.
These four individuals who requested anonymity for personal reasons, disclosed that the dirty area which serves as the final destination for waste collected in Bamenda, has actually been their source of income.
Separating and grouping the waste as plastic bottles, sachet papers, iron, copper, aluminum and cans is the major activity carried out each day, with the intention of selling them to interested buyers who most often come from Douala.
Lamenting for the council’s reluctance to recycle the waste, one of these individuals stated clearly that “What the town authorities consider as waste can be transformed into wealth if recycling companies are set up in Bamenda.
“He further explained that, “the plastic containers you see here could be used to manufacture buckets and trash cans, while the left over kitchen waste could be used to manufacture organic manure.
“The individuals concluded by calling on the government and municipal authorities to consider an investment in these sector, or funding projects that can transform the waste into objects that are helpful to the society.
