A Health Voucher Scheme has gone operational in Bamenda. The pilot phase launched on September 6, 2024 at the Regional Hospital Bamenda and Azire Medicalized Health center.
The Voucher scheme goes into effect after the signing of a contract between the Northwest Regional Fund for Health promotion and these two health facilities
According to the administrator of the fund Dr. Fondoh Richard, the health voucher is a vital component under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) interventions package of the region to stimulate demand for ANC services, reduce the financial barriers experienced by many pregnant women, above all, curtail mother and child deaths in the region through the provision of holistic care to all pregnant women.
Dr. Fondoh highlighted that, to benefit from the health voucher scheme, pregnant women must be pre enrolled on the UHC platform, purchase their voucher at a unique cost of 6000frs.
With the help of the health voucher, expectant mothers will have their babies normally or via Cesarean sections without incurring additional costs. New born babies are also entitled to free health care services till they are 42 days old, he added.
It is worth mentioning that, in addition to the health voucher, the UHC package covers health care costs for the treatment of simple and severe malaria in children aged 0 to 5 years, management of dialysis patients, HIV, onchocerciasis, tuberculosis and vaccination and some community health interventions.
