Valentine, Another Lover’s Day

Another 14 February is here, another Valentine’s day is here. Lover birds can’t wait to use this day to confess their undying love for the other. Valentine’s Day has become a day that many, mostly teenagers venture into the world of love entanglements.

Students in secondary schools most especially use this day to make their intent towards their crush, crush because it’s not the right thing to do for these teenagers who are still living under their parent wings. Others who are already old at it consolidate premature love with gifts from Valentine cards to confectionaries. This is usually under the fear of school authorities, parents and society because this is not supposed to be their priority.

For the more mature ones, those in their twenties and looking for long lasting partners, the mood is different. A date out over dinner, some drinks or visit to some exquisite sites. Some serious chat and maybe a proposal to be a boy or girl friend (forget about the latter, no girl wants to be the first to say that) or maybe “can we make this work for ever?” But there are the very unserious ones, the gigolo, the play boys and girls, the lust generation who are out for pleasure. They will use the sweetest words to lure you in, they are not ready to settle.

And there are those newly weeded, those in their late twenties and early thirties, Some not far from their honey moon. They want to make their relationship stronger. They don’t forget V day. They bring gifts; they go out for launch, or clubbing. This group for some remember fondly how this same day years back brought them together.

And there are those well above 40 who have seen it all. They can say and practice true love, but yet not so comfortable telling one another. Only their deeds speak their minds. They May just skip the day with a few hard to come by words or true gifts, they prefer the birthday wishes to this.

On this day City FM web went down town to find out more from some Bamenda residents what they think about this day. It was surprising that just as many people observe the day, a similar number don’t even think about it. Many who recognize the day think its not only about romantic love, but thinking about all who matter in your live. (audio vox pop below)
