The Northwest region of Cameroon, particularly the vibrant city of Bamenda, hosted the 45th edition of world tourism day under the theme ” Tourism and Peace”.
The event which took place at the Regional Assembly, Station Bamenda on the 27th of September 2024, was graced by the presence of the Minister of State and Minister of Tourism and Leisure, Bello Bouba Maigari. The event brought together esteemed dignitaries with aim to raise the international Committee’s awareness on the social, cultural, political, economic and environmental importance of tourism.
“For 45 years, the world has been celebrating World tourism day and never has it been celebrated out of Yaounde. But today, His Excellency the Minister of State/Minister of Tourism and Leisure, chose amongst all the towns in Cameroon to come celebrate the world tourism day in Bamenda ” said the Bamenda City Council mayor, Paul Achobong in appreciation of the minister, for giving the Bamenda people such honor and privilege.
In his address to the guests, the minister highlighted that it is no coincidence that the day was commemorated in Bamenda regarding how strategically Bamenda is, expressing a common desire to demonstrate to the world that even in an environment of crisis and tensions, tourism and leisure can be a force for peace.
He went on to say ” we decided to celebrate world tourism day in Bamenda to congratulate the resilience of the region, the promoters of the tourism sector and what we have seen so far is very encouraging. This region and it’s people are resilient in beating insecurity and fostering peace. It is also the message of the head of state president Paul Biya who is a president of peace.”
The celebration featured vibrant cultural performances that showcased the diverse traditions of the region. Local dancers, musicians, and artisans captivated the audience with their talents, illustrating how tourism can promote cultural exchange and appreciation. These activities not only entertained but also served to reinforce the message of peace and unity.
A significant highlight of the event was the recognition of distinguished tourism establishments in the region. Several awards were presented to managers and owners who have demonstrated excellence in service delivery and commitment to sustainable practices.
Speaking over City FM Radio station Bamenda on Saturday, September 28, Mr. Muandze Marcel Regional Delegate for Tourism and Leisure for the Northwest Region said tourism remains a véritable tool that can be used to bridge cultural, religious and political divide and promote peace. He acknowledged that the crisis in the region has an effect on tourism no doubt but said the NW region is one of the most endowed region with touristic potentials in the region. In the same light with his minister, praised tourism promoters in the NW for the resilience in remaining in business despite the crisis.
