The Abakwa Boys have kept alive their hopes of playing in the MTN Elite One playoff with a 3-1 Victory away in Douala against Les Astres of Douala, on Sunday February 25. Goals from Njepnang Hyede, Ngufor Terence and Febe Fritz Bongaman were enough to seal the fate of the match before Les Astres pulled one back.
The results means PWD now counts 23 points , and with a chance to take their tally to 26 if they pulled another victory away against fellow top four contenders, Gazelle FC of Garoua on the last day of play in the first phase of the championship.
Sofar, PWD of Bamenda is on 23 points after 17 matches played currently occupy the 7th of 10 spot in pool A. Above the Abakwa boys are Canon Sportif of Yaoundé on 30 points and already sure of a top four finish. They play against AS Fortuna in their last group match. The fate of both teams is already sealed as AS Fortuna on 14 points is condemned to play in the relegation playoff.
Three points behind is Dynamo FC of Douala that needs only a point to confirm a top four place. Dynamo next play against arch city rival, Union of Douala who are on 24 points and will consolidate a top four finish if they secure a win and results elsewhere go in their favour. Union currently occupies the 6th position, one point behind Gazalle and Colombe on 25 points each.
Hoping to hold tight to their currently positions will be Colombe and Gazelle on 25 points each at the third and fourth spots. Colombe challenges a resurgent Aigle of Menoua who are themselves vying for a top four finish. Aigle holds on to 5th spot on 24 points and would be in the top four if they secure a win. Gazelle will need to win in Garoua against PWD. Anything short of that could through in some complicated calculations.
The last of the five group matches scheduled for Saturday March 2, 20024 will see Les Astres take on Bamboutos FC of Mbouda. The Mangwa Boys in their last two matches droped from 4th to 8th spot but still stand an outside chance to make it through if they secure maximum points against Les Astres of Douala. Astres destiny now lies in the relegation play off
