The 20th anniversary of SYNESTER, the union of taxi drivers, was celebrated August 29th, 2024 at Big Mankon, marking two decades of advocating for drivers in the region. The event drew over 150 drivers, park representatives and numerous dignitaries, including the Senior Divisional Officer of Mezam, the National President of SYNESTER, and the Regional Delegate of Labour and Social Security.
During the ceremony, the Archbishop Andrew Nkea delivered an inspiring message, urging drivers to unite, uphold the truth, and promote peace within their communities. His emphasis on honesty resonated deeply with attendees, as the challenges faced by drivers in Bamenda have been increasingly severe. He also urge the drivers not to be afraid and speak out when they are hurt and do what is correct, upholding the laws of the country. ” Honesty is the best principle” the Archbishop emphasized.
Mr. Ndi Paolius, the Regional President of SYNESTER, congratulated the government for the effort they have put in constructing some of the roads in the city of Bamenda but pleaded that more can be done. He also outlined the pressing issues that drivers encounter daily especially being cought up in the present socio-political crisis.
He said they faced in a situation were separatist are requesting for a change of colour of their taxis to a colour they want. He highlighted concerns such as the burning of taxis, deteriorating road conditions, and the rising costs of fuel and vehicle documentation.
These challenges, he noted, have created a difficult environment for drivers striving to make a living. To address these issues, Mr. Paolius called on the government to engage in dialogue to foster peace and stability. He also proposed that the government allocate funds to support the union’s activities, which would enable drivers to operate more effectively and sustainably. He added that all drivers should endeavor to get all the necessary documentations to stay on a safe side.
The anniversary celebration served not only as a reflection on SYNESTER’s achievements but also as a rallying point for the community to come together in the face of adversity, reinforcing the need for solidarity and support among drivers in Bamenda. It was a day of merry making for the drivers and they all look forward for the celebration of another decade.
